Introduction to No Longer at Ease

No Longer at Ease is the second novel in Chinua Achebe's 'African Trilogy,' depicting various stories about Nigeria and its relationship to the colonial English regime. No Longer at Ease tells the story of Obi Okonkwo who travels to England to study and returns to find a Nigeria that does not live up to his romantic, nostalgic view of it. He is torn by the conflicting influences of Nigerian and European culture, and put under increasing financial strain as one of the Umuofia sons to have 'made it' into a good life. These pressures eventually lead to tragedy and shame when he is caught accepting bribes as a government official.
