Henry IV Part 1 is the second installment of what has come to be known as Shakespeare's first Henriad tetralogy. It is preceded by Richard II, and followed by Henry IV Part 2 and Richard III. The play follows the newly crowned King Henry IV's battles with the rebel causes that sprang up after he took overthrew King Richard II. The protagonist, however, is Henry's son, Hal, who over the course of the play transforms from a flippant and frivolous tavern dweller to a brave and heroic combatant of the rebel forces.
