Persuasion tells the story of Anne Elliot and her family, once-wealthy land owners with the head of the family holding the title of baronet. The story takes place eight years after Anne rejected the marriage proposal of Frederick Wentworth (now Captain), though they were in love. At the time, he was poor and had no immediate prospects, but he has returned wealthy thanks to a successful career in the navy. She wanted to marry him, but was persuaded to refuse him, in large part thanks to a close family friend, Lady Russell.
