Introduction to An Inspector Calls

An Inspector Calls is considered to be a classic of 20th century English drama. The playwright, J.B. Priestley, initially had difficulty finding a venue for his play. The play was debuted in the USSR, allegedly because English theatrical venues considered it to be too critical for wartime entertainment. When it was performed in London the following year, however, An Inspector Calls was extremely well-received by both audiences and critics. Though it eventually fell out of fashion as a "drawing room drama," the play has experienced resurgences in popularity in the form of successful stage revivals and several film adaptations.
