Introduction to A Man of the People

A Man of the People offers a satirical perspective on the nature of greed, power, and politics. The story focuses on a power struggle between Chief Minister Nanga and his former student, the narrator of the novel, Odili. While staying with the Minister of Culture, Odili learns that his former teacher is corrupt and selfish. Odili seeks revenge on Nanga by running against him in the coming election. A larger growing political conflict plays out between the two men as the country to thrown into chaos. In A Man of the People, Achebe calls into question people's complicity in government corruption and how power struggles affect average citizens.
