Dubliners Lesson Plan

James Joyce's first major work, published in 1914, Dubliners chronicles various intersecting stories of life in Dublin at the turn of the 20th century. Dubliners is an example of early modernism. In it, Joyce experiments with narrative style in ways that would come to be hallmarks of modernist fiction, including a focus on interiority, streams of consciousness, non-linear narration, and an emphasis on subjectivity and perception, both social and sensory. Dubliners was published before Joyce had achieved any great fame, and he was forced to engage in a protracted publishing battle before its eventual release.
