Published in 1919, Winesburg, Ohio is a classic of American modernism. Based on author Sherwood Anderson's own childhood home, Winesburg, Ohio explores the complexities and depths of the citizens in the titular midwestern town. Combining a realist's eye for detail with surrealist interludes, Winesburg, Ohio consists largely of local color sketches, each about a different person in the town. The connecting figure is George Willard, a young reporter for the Winesburg Eagle.
