Introduction to The New Jim Crow

The New Jim Crow was first published in 2010 and became a phenomenon. It argues that the current system of mass incarceration is the same as a racial caste system, like the Jim Crow system that followed Reconstruction. In other words, she argues that mass incarceration disproportionately affects people of color in a way that makes them second-class citizens. Throughout the text, she carefully lays out her argument by showing the similarities and differences between the old Jim Crow and the new Jim Crow.
