Introduction to Eight Plus One: Stories

Eight Plus One is a collection of nine short stories by Robert Cormier. These stories are linked by a general theme of family relationships: between teenagers and their parents, parents and their children, siblings, grandparents, and spouses. Each story is narrated in the first person. Cormier’s writing is introspective and invested in developing the narrator’s point of view. The stories in this collection take place either during the Great Depression or during the time at which each story was written (ranging from 1965 to 1975).
