One World Deli opens in San Juan

THE PEPPER MILL - Pepper Teehankee - The Philippine Star

Since opening its doors in 2022, One World Deli has become a purveyor of welfare-friendly meats, responsibly sourced seafood, unique pantry staples, and organic local produce. Following the success of their first branch on Jupiter Street in Makati, they opened their second branch located at The Corner House in San Juan City. This neighborhood spot is poised to become a go-to destination in San Juan, and I am overjoyed as I can walk there from my home!

A highlight of the evening was the opportunity to engage with experts from various fields, whose items are available in the deli. They were Christian Schmidradner of SeaTrace International, Nicolo Durian of Pedro Farms, chef John Lees of The Tattooed Baker, Jamir Ocampo of Tsaa Laya, Michael Harris Conlin of Henry & Sons, chocolate expert Christian Valdes, Gelato Manila’s Zarah Manikan, One World Deli’s own Ian Santos for wine and Nadine Howell for pasta and pizza, and Ana Niguidula and Pia Sy of For Keeps.

Guests sampled a selection of meats handpicked by Vicky Lauchengco and chef Migs Gianan and flocked to the Seafood Bar for Irish Gallagher oysters and fresh yellow-fin tuna from SeaTrace International.

Located at the center of the deli are its main pods consisting of the Meat Anton counter, which features such items as John Stone Beef dry-aged meats from Ireland, black angus beef by Braveheart from the USA, Red Duroc pork from Dingley Dell from the UK, and Satsuma Fukunaga Wagyu from Japan.

The Farm Fresh area has a mix of local and imported organic fruits and vegetables, as well as towers of hydroponically grown greens.

The Cellar houses a mix of old- and new-world wines, while the Top Tipples bar pours out choice wines and spirits. The café area serves up meals using ingredients available at the deli, while the bakery features bread baked daily by The Tattooed Baker.

Chefs Jorge Mendez of M?dan and Tamura Hiroyuki of Ramen Ron

Ramen Ron x Modan

Experience the Ramen Ron x M?dan Tsukemen Set for a limited time only. Ramen Ron’s chef Tamura Hiroyuki has teamed up with Jorge Mendez of M?dan and together, they have created a unique collaborative dish set featuring two of the most beloved Japanese dishes: tsukemen (a ramen dish where noodles are dipped into a separate bowl of soup) and karaage (deep- fried chicken).

The main component of the set is a Tori Gyokai Tsukemen, a hearty bowl of thick noodles topped with chashu pork, menma (bamboo shoots), an egg, and nori (seaweed). The noodles are served with a rich and flavorful dipping broth of pork, “silky fowl,” and bonito with steamed gyoza.

Served as a side dish is a Karai Karaage Bun with Tsukemono, a bun stuffed with spicy and crispy fried chicken and tsukemono (Japanese pickles), a mixture of cucumber, daikon radish, and onions.

Chef Tamura says, “I think chef Jorge is friendly, knowledgeable, and studious — a great person. This was the first time I made tsukemen, collaborating with another chef. It felt fresh and fun working with him.”

The Ramen Ron x M?dan Tsukemen Set is priced at P850 and will be on the menu at Ramen Ron until Sept. 18. Only 20 sets will be available per day. For reservations, call Ramen Ron Rockwell Center at (0917) 628-7245.
