MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights has urged the government to promptly reassess the cases of other persons deprived of liberty following the release of former Sen. Leila de Lima on bail.

A Muntinlupa court granted her bail Monday, bringing the outspoken critic of former President Rodrigo Duterte and his deadly “war on drugs” a step closer to freedom after almost seven years behind bars.

In a statement Wednesday, the CHR welcomed the release of its former chairperson and stressed that every Filipino is entitled to a fair trial and speedy disposition of cases.

“We urge the Philippine government for the timely review of cases of other persons deprived of liberty who have been awaiting resolution of their cases, regardless of their status, gender, and political affiliation among others,” the commission said.

Through such effort, not only does the government uphold the human rights guarantees of the Constitution, it also contributes to the decongestion of jails and other detention facilities in the country,” it added.

The CHR also stressed the crucial role of due process and the rule of law in protecting human rights as well as in providing appropriate remedies and reparation in instances of human rights abuse and violations.

“Similarly, we underscore the role of an independent judiciary in ensuring an impartial and transparent process for every aggrieved and accused of a crime,” it said.
KAPATID, a support group formed by relatives and friends of political prisoners, said the release of de Lima should pave the way for the release of other prisoners facing political persecution.

De Lima and human rights organizations have long maintained that the drug charges against her were fabricated and politically motivated.

The former senator had been acquitted of two out of the three charges against her.
