Keeping its focus on women-founded businesses from the Visayas region, Disenyo del Sur made its anticipated debut into an exclusive holiday preview event on the rooftop of the JEG Tower in Cebu city.

Founded by Amanda LuYm and Cacay Moras-Server, Disenyo del Sur is an online platform celebrating the creative expressions of Visayan women and showcasing their unique and carefully crafted items.

LuYm herself, the designer of the mother brand All That Glitters, says “Disenyo del Sur is very much a thriving ecosystem, and I insist that it stays healthy. I need it to be a signal to other makers that you can have your product come out… but you need to do it well.”

What began as an online platform during the middle of the pandemic to showcase sustainable, small-batch, artisan finds handcrafted in the region is moving beyond the digital and bringing with it its four in-house brands and six other collaborators. Their house brands are jewelry creator All That Glitters, lounge and resort-wear brand Padayon, Blank Canvas for beauty and massage oils, and Potheads for plant holders.

Their collaborators include Atoa for handwoven and embroidered bags, two that deal with artisanal communities — Curio for local weaves in modern ideas and HoliCOW, which brought homeware and small-format furniture from a selection of community-driven and zero-waste products that were upcycled and recycled — Stassi & Co. for soaps, and Artisanat for linen wear.

For the event, they had special collaborators from Cebu that included Jaime Chua’s Blooms and Greens, specializes in plants and landscaping, Qube Gallery for art pieces, and Neil Felipp, who does unique home décor and fashion.

Disenyo del Sur is a brand of creativity, empowerment, and resilience distinct to women of the south.

Gavel&Block’s October edition features the estates of fashion designer Pepito Albert and Philstar society columnist Maurice Arcache.

Of Maurice Arcache and Pepito Albert

Jason Montinola’s sculpture from The Sensational Painter series from the Pepito Albert collection Gavel&Block headlines the collections of Pepito Albert and Maurice Arcache happening this Saturday, October 21.

It is really sad that in the last few months, Manila society lost two icons and two good friends of mine. Maurice Arcache, the indefatigable chronicler of the country’s social scene and writer for The Philippine STAR, passed away in February, and renowned fashion designer Pepito Albert followed last May.

Both are reunited in their estate sale, which features the art, books, furniture and objects that Arcache and Albert accumulated in their lifetimes.

Jason Montinola’s sculpture from his “The Sensational Painter Series” is part of Pepito Albert’s art collection, up for bidding at gavel&block’s auction this Oct.21, starting at 11am.

The lots from both estates offer a revealing glimpse into their private lives. Arcache’s collection is a collision of styles and genres, which displays his refined upbringing as a privileged scion from an older generation as well as his evolved taste. There are elaborately carved candelabras, Tiffany-style lamps, and pottery alongside ashtrays from Cartier and Hermès, and canapé dishes from Versace by Rosenthal.

Art collector Albert amassed an inventory of prints, sculptures, and paintings (which he proudly showed me, to my amazement). He has works by contemporary artists like Valeria Cavestany, Jason Oliveria, and his portrait by Joseph Tecson. He also enjoyed collecting designer toys, like Jason Montinola’s sculpture from The Sensational Painter series and the Kaws “Bape Dissected Milo.”
