MANILA, Philippines — With the planned closure of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in 2028, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) is planning to build a 100-hectare open park in the prison reservation in Muntinlupa City.

BuCor director Gen. Gregorio Catapang Jr. said this was a proposal of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla to be implemented after all NBP inmates have been transferred to regional prison facilities.

Catapang added that the remaining hectares of the 350-hectare reservation would be used for other government facilities.

While the proposal has yet to be finalized, the BuCor recently opened its Sunken Garden for public use.

The Sunken Garden, located in the NBP reservation, was opened as a training ground for the Football Club Bilibid, composed of the inmates’ children and underprivileged kids.         –
